The hosts of Health, Hope & Inspiration focus on effective approaches to cancer care ministry, and ways to meet an individual’s unique needs while on their cancer journey.

Show Notes:

In this episode, hosts Rev. Percy McCray and Wayne Shepherd discuss the topic of how to effectively care for someone who has cancer. Pastor Percy shares insights about his experiences ministering to people on a cancer journey, and how best to prepare. One of the most important principles involves listening actively to the patient: “Do not come to the conversation with all of the answers. It’s important to come to the conversation with a fresh set of ears to hear the unique story and narrative of that person sitting in front of us.”

Another critical point is to approach the conversation withholding any judgments or unsolicited advice about the patient or what they’re experiencing. “The average person who is dealing with the effect of cancer and treatment and a diagnosis, they’re not prepared for this. We need to be mindful of the dynamics of their situation before we begin to offer answers.”

The hosts also talk about creating an environment of safety and confidentiality when a patient shares personal information: “Empowering that particular person with their personal information makes them feel more comfortable in trusting you and sharing more information with you.”
