The hosts of Health, Hope & Inspiration discuss the dilemma of guilt, anger and fear caregivers can face on many levels, particularly when they’re trying to come to terms with a situation they are unprepared for. They also talk about creative ways in which others can reach out and offer support to caregivers and their families in helpful, non-judgmental ways while being respectful of their individual needs.
Show Notes:
The hosts of Health, Hope and Inspiration talk candidly about the needs of caregivers and the physical, emotional and spiritual dilemmas they experience when they face the prospect of caring for a loved one, whether short or long term. Pastor Percy draws from his own experience of watching his mother act as long-term caregiver for his father, who suffers from severe head and brain trauma. Learning how to care for oneself while caring for others is essential: “Caring for individuals who are dealing with sickness and disease can take its toll upon you. There is a way to pace oneself and begin to understand how to disconnect from moments in time so you can reconnect and continue to renew and refresh.”
Pastor Percy also describes the resentment that caregivers can initially experience: “There’s different things caregivers are going through. ‘I didn’t sign up for this. This is not what I thought would happen.’ It’s important not to judge them. There is no class that prepares you for the rigors of being a caregiver under the most extreme circumstances. If you know someone who is caring for someone, reach out and offer to be a caregiver to a caregiver.”
