Hosts Rev. Percy McCray and Wayne Shepherd sit down with cancer patient Maria Antaya who shares her amazing story about how her life-changing encounter with the scriptures at age 24 has helped her cultivate a faith that sustains her in the face of a pancreatic cancer diagnosis.
Show Notes:
When you ask Maria Antaya how she feels about having cancer, her response may not be quite what you’d expect. Now in her 40’s, Maria is battling metastatic pancreatic cancer, but you would never know it. She beams with positivity. “When they told me, ‘I’m so sorry. You have pancreatic cancer,’ I said, ‘Don’t worry. I’m ready for that.’” Growing up in a large family, Maria knew little about God, but when she turned 24, she was compelled to search the Bible for answers to her own questions. “So, I started opening the Bible, and I see the Old Testament and the New Testament, to which I said, ‘How am I going to start?’ And that day, I read for four hours. And I never stopped reading the Bible.”
Shortly after, Maria committed her life to following God. Even a cancer diagnosis cannot shake her faith and trust in God’s faithfulness. Antaya is resolute: “I’m ready, because I serve God with all my heart. God knows that my heart belongs to Him.”
Quotes:
- “I try my best to give my life to God. God says, ‘Be ready, because you don’t know the day that I come back.’ You don’t know the day that you are going to die.”
- “The Lord loves me so much and because I give my life to Him, I believe I have eternal life with Him.”
- “I think it’s important to know about your body and your health. We need to read more about this kind of disease. Learn to eat better and make a lot of changes. Exercise, too.”
