Show Notes:

Aileen Stansel, a former nurse educator at CTCA, lost both parents to cancer and then faced her own battle with breast cancer. She spoke with Rev. Percy McCray about the ways God used cancer for the good. “He (God) used it (cancer) to humble my father and bring him to Himself. In my mother’s life, He used it to restore many broken relationships…in my life, He used it to show me that the things that I was worried about were nothing and to get my priorities straight…God will use anything.”

She also saw God teaching her about His guidance through her own cancer journey. “God guided everything. He guided me in finding out I had cancer when the test even didn’t show it initially. He guided me to know what doctors to select. He guided me to know what treatments to take and which ones to turn down. He guided me in knowing how to care for myself and how to talk with my family…you know, every step of the way.”

Although she doesn’t want to face cancer again, she trusts that if it comes, God will guide her again. “I trust that God is in control, and if God allows me to have cancer again…then I know that He’ll either cure me or He will help me walk through it, but there’s a purpose for it in my life.”

Right now, her purpose is working in cardiac rehab helping patients. She understands the issues of pain, faith and the unknown healing journey through her own story—and now offers the hope she experienced first-hand. “No matter what I face, He’s bigger and He knows what’s best. He’ll guide me. All I have to do is follow His lead.”

Quotes:

  • “I know that cancer did not catch God by surprise. And He has a purpose for everything that He allows in our life.”
  • “If I did not have a relationship with the Lord, I could not have made it through this.”
  • “Cancer—it is a devastating condition, but it can also be a door —a door for healing or a door for my parents to go straight to the Lord.”
