Show Notes:

Steve Strang, CEO of Charisma Media, was used to sharing others’ stories of faith, but when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he had to live out his own. He shares with Rev. Percy McCray what he learned about faith and taking ownership of his health.

“As a Christian, I believe that God heals, and I believe that God used the doctor and led me to the right treatment. But I did not just do prayer.” Taking ownership of his health and then partnering with medical professionals that he trusts were key to Mr. Strang walking out his faith in the midst of his cancer journey.

Even with capable doctors he trusted, his trial required him to apply his faith. “It was a spiritual experience ‘cause there was a lot of fear…I believe all things work out for the good…but when it’s you, it’s hard to be philosophical.”

Years before his diagnosis, he lost a good friend to prostate cancer because the disease was caught too late. This reality—and genetic testing showing Mr. Strang at a higher risk for prostate cancer—motivated him to pay attention after a blood sample indicated high PSA (prostate specific antigen used as a marker for the presence of prostate cancer in men).

When he heard the prostate cancer diagnosis, he still felt shock. But, he also felt thankful he chose to be tested and take ownership of his health so they caught it early. Now he is cancer free and advocates for screening. “It’s better to be safe than sorry…it’s better to prevent something.”
