Show Notes:

Tamara Windahl began her decade-long battle with four different types of cancer without a relationship with God. But when she faced the overwhelming prognosis of stage four ovarian cancer, Christian songs from her childhood came to mind. “I needed to find something to hold onto, something that wouldn’t change because every part of my life had been changed. And so began my search.”

Her friend, Deb, brought her a Bible to the hospital. “I began seeking God through prayer and reading the Bible. And little did I know then that the Bible would actually become my lifeline.” Deb’s father, Don, consistently shared about God’s love to Tamara and her husband once she was out of the hospital. “He talked about God’s love, and I could actually sense God’s love surrounding us.”

In discovering a relationship with God, Tamara found what she could hold onto that would not change as she sought clinical cancer treatment. “I was undergoing another difficult chemo treatment in the hospital, lying in my hospital bed, the words of another song I had sung came to me. ‘Turn your eyes upon Jesus. Look full in His wonderful face. And the things of Earth will grow strangely dim in the light of His glory and grace.’”

Experiencing the love and hope of God in her cancer journey prompted Tamara to write a devotional, Abiding Hope: God’s Promises During Your Cancer Journey. “I wrote Abiding Hope in order to encourage anyone who is suffering, or to equip others for future suffering…no one is immune to suffering, but lasting hope, Abiding Hope is available to everybody.”

Quotes:

  • “We can live four weeks without food, four days without water, four minutes without air, but not one moment without hope.”
  • “God wants to talk with us…through His Word. It just completely changes everything when we know He is there for us and can help us and guide us and hear our hearts.”
  • “There are so many temporary hopes among the world, and they just do not last, but our hope in Jesus. He is the hope of the world.”
