Never take it personally.
Joining Rev. Percy McCray behind the microphone is none other than his wife Anita McCray.
Married to Rev. McCray for 12 years, Anita, always the doting wife, shares her insights about the challenges of offering support to a strong-willed, Type A personality, who is not always eager to accept help.
Anita shares her very personal reflections, including her reaction when Rev. McCray’s cancer diagnosis was confirmed.
“You have that initial shock,” she says. “But in the back of my mind and in my heart, I already knew [it was cancer]. We knew in our hearts that something was wrong, but I wasn’t afraid. We were ready for what’s next.”
Listeners will learn the nuances of being a caregiver to a cancer patient, including how one must learn to pay attention to their loved ones’ cues and signals.
- “Being a doer that I am, I had already been in prayer, and I was ready for this [her husband’s cancer prognosis].”
- “Okay, here we go, let’s get ready and let’s move.”
- “To help someone who wants to do everything by themselves can definitely be a challenge as a caregiver.”
