Show Notes:

Host Rev. Percy McCray offers insight into his motivation of why, for more than two decades, he has been able to remain engaged in supporting the cancer community even as he began his own battle with colon cancer three years ago.

“I’ve often been asked, why do this type of work, why would you do this?” he says. His simple response of “authenticity” may surprise you.

“The truth is cancer reveals who people really are and when we understand that, then you get to see people’s authentic self,” he says.

Hit play and listen to this heartfelt and insightful conversation that will help listeners understand how a cancer diagnosis and journey levels the playing field of life, regardless of race, age, gender, sociopolitical, or economic orientation, by forcing one to “get real” and address the basics of one’s humanity when under duress from a threat of sickness and disease.

Quotes:

  • “It is the reason why I serve them [cancer community] faithfully; they are people who get forced to be authentic. The question is, who is going to show up and be authentic with them while they’re being authentic?”
  • “It’s really being able to love people on a level that is unfettered and real because this is where cancer patients ultimately find themselves.”
  • “I will forever give my all to the cancer community.”
