Show Notes:

Host Rev. Percy McCray is joined by Brian Bowers, a stage IV colorectal cancer patient, who was diagnosed in 2017. Brian, who was in active treatment at Cancer Treatment Centers of America® (CTCA), Phoenix at the time of this recording, has undergone several surgeries and more than 100 rounds of chemotherapy.

A veteran of the United States Air Force, Bowers has since been discharged and currently serves as the men’s pastor at the Gathering Church in Surprise, Arizona.

“I was assigned here to Luke Air Force Base [in Arizona], and I got diagnosed five weeks after moving here, which was really, really hard because we left our community in Hawaii where we were stationed,” he says.

Brian says he and his family have overcome many hurdles during his cancer journey.

“Because I was stage IV, they never planned for me to live really,” he says. “I had a 5 percent chance to live that first year.”

Push play now to listen to the resiliency of this amazing husband, father, and men’s spiritual leader, who found renewed purpose and strength in his pursuit of physical and spiritual healing.

Quotes:

  • “[Having cancer] is like something that happens to somebody else.”
  • “I feel like, of course, cancer chose me, I didn’t choose cancer…”
  • “I used to struggle really badly when my surgery didn’t go well and I was stuck in a recliner for many, many months, and I had already been dismissed from the military at that point, so my whole life was upside down.”
