Show Notes:

Host Rev. Percy McCray is joined at the microphone by Rev. John Sheard, presiding bishop of the Church of God in Christ International, who discusses the great need for the faith community to embrace health care management.

This conversation took place on the floor of the National Conference of Black Churches held in Orlando, Florida, where faith, community, and educational leaders gathered to discuss the state of the union of mental, emotional, and physical well-being in the community of faith.

Bishop Sheard emphatically encourages people to engage with their medical community.

“Go to the doctor, brothers,” he says. “Go to the doctor. Get checked. You know, when you get to certain ages, there’s certain tests you need to take care of. It’s undeniable.”

Push play now to hear this prestigious faith leader remind us that “we cannot afford to just take this mindset. It’s a misnomer, this mindset: the Lord is going to take care of me. You know, you got to take care of yourself.”

Quotes:

  • “My faith is strong. However, I go, and I get things checked out [visiting his doctor], and my faith says I’m going to be all right.”
  • “I’m not afraid to get checked out. I’m not afraid to go to the doctor.”
  • “I just believe that God wants us to be in good health. He wants our souls to prosper and be in good health. And so, we have to do what we have to do to make sure; I exercise every morning.”
