Show Notes:

I recently had the opportunity to spend time with dentist and two-time breast cancer patient Sylvia Jones, who has received chemotherapy and has undergone a double mastectomy.

Also a pastor’s wife, Jones candidly discusses self-image after surgery, short hair, and breast enhancement. The conversation between Sylvia and me focused much on her outlook and demeanor in the midst of her journey.

“I intentionally said, ‘We’re going to have a theme. So, how are we going to move in this space?’” she says. “So, joy became our theme.”

Listen now to hear and experience Sylvia’s infectious energy and spirit during her time as a cancer patient, which was fueled by her words of affirmation: “I will speak life. Every morning—not some mornings—I wake up, I smile. You send those endorphins up in your brain and then you can have this energy.”

Quotes:

  • When faced with hair loss, Sylvia’s husband told her, “I like you!”
  • “I went to Hobby Lobby; I got the letters: J-O-Y. I decorated a little bit. Put it on the fireplace mantle. When you walk in the house, you see the word ‘joy.’”
